You may be a candidate for laser gum treatment if Dr. Maddux recommends while deep cleaning your gums during a process called scaling and root planing. Scaling and root planning is the process of deep cleaning bacteria and build-up from under the gums. Generally, ultrasonic tools can be used to clean tartar from tooth roots that have been exposed by receding gums. However, removing bacteria from particularly deep periodontal pockets is often quite tricky, using this approach. This is where laser therapy can be particularly useful. The laser allows access to deeper and harder to reach areas but with minimal discomfort. Dr. Maddux does not believe in a one-sized fit-all approach and will recommend treatment, based on your individual needs.
