Dr. Maddux Discusses Non-surgical Methods To Treat Gum Disease
Dr. Maddux’s recommended method of treatment highly depends on the level of infection in your gums. If your infection is in its early stages, having a deep cleaning could be enough to remove the infection, as the hardened bacteria or calculus is scraped or scaled away from tooth surfaces, effectively removing most of the source of infection.
For cases in which infection is more substantial, and which have begun to show signs of damage will need to be scaled or planed. This is sometimes used as a standalone treatment, but most often is part of ongoing therapy to remove the bacteria over a series of regular visits to our office.
When the tooth show signs of wear and tear, when some teeth are missing, or if you are a patient experiencing TMJ symptoms, occlusal bite adjustment may be beneficial. When someone’s teeth fail to bite together correctly it can worsen periodontal disease.
Preventative dental care is vital as part of an ongoing treatment program. Patients need to be committed towards attending regular checkups and to having ongoing therapy to treat periodontal disease and they must be prepared to look after their teeth and gums at home by flossing and brushing regularly.
